You’re Grating Cheese Wrong—This Hack Will Make It 10x Easier
I used to dread taco night or making homemade mac and cheese because of the mountain of cheddar I had to grate. My arms would get tired and I always seemed to nick my knuckles. Then I saw a simple trick that changed everything.
It turns out we have been using that box grater all wrong for years.
Flip the box grater
Most of us stand the grater upright on a cutting board and scrub the cheese up and down. Instead, try laying the box grater flat on its side. It might seem strange, but it makes the whole process more stable and less awkward.
Grip is important
When it's time to get grating, lay your box grater flat against a rimmed baking sheet. Grab the handle of the grater and the edge of the baking sheet with the same hand for better grip. Use your other free hand to slide the cheese against the grater.
Contain the mess
When the grater is on its side, all that shredded cheese collects right onto the baking sheet. You don't have to worry about little bits flying all over your counter or floor. It keeps everything neat and contained until you're ready to move it into your mixing bowl.
Save your muscles
Pushing down on a vertical grater can really strain your wrists and shoulders after a while. By grating horizontally, you can use your body weight more effectively. It requires much less effort to shred a big block of cheese this way, which is a total lifesaver for your tired joints.
This cheese grater hack is a simple way to make cooking feel less like a chore. It's a small change, but it really does make a huge difference in the kitchen.
I hope these tips help you as much as they've helped me.
